WHAT IS A DOT PHYSICAL?

Truck and Warehouse

A DOT (Department of Transportation) physical confirms whether you are healthy enough to perform the demanding profession of a CMV (commercial motor vehicle) driver. It helps to keep the nation's roads safe and the examination includes the following:

  • Blood pressure and pulse rate

  • Hearing

  • Urinalysis

  • Vision

Why do I need a DOT physical?

The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires commercial drivers to pass a physical exam to keep their certification. Since drivers of large commercial vehicles (5 tons or more) have a big impact on road safety, they are considered “safety-sensitive” by the DOT.

To stay compliant and keep working, drivers must complete regular physical exams. These exams can only be done by certified medical examiners approved by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). At United Hope Medical (UHM), we follow FMCSA guidelines to ensure commercial drivers are healthy and fit to work safely

How can a UHM provider help me with a DOT physical?

Please fill out the Health History section of the DOT Medical Examination Report before your appointment and bring it with you. At your visit, a UHM provider will review your medical history, perform a basic health check, and refer you for further tests if needed. After the exam, the provider will complete the required medical report for your commercial driver’s certification.

The DOT physical at UHM is part of your medical certification but does not replace a full annual wellness exam.
